Medical Care
We found that not everyone had had their capacity to make day-to-day decisions assessed and that decisions made on their behalf were not always clearly explained. We have asked the provider to tell us what they are going to do to meet the requirements of the law in relation to consent to care and treatment. However, the mealtime experience was not a positive one for many. People, or their representatives, were involved in making decisions about their care and support which was planned to meet their individual needs.
Colonia Court takes pride in offering extensive care expertise. As well as being able to offer general nursing and residential care, carers also specialise in dementia care, and care for Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease.... So Is Your Care
People felt that there were not always enough staff on duty. We observed that although staff were caring in their interactions with people there was a lack of attention to detail in ensuring all of people’s needs were met. Training records did not accurately identify gaps in training and not all staff had received training in subject areas relevant to their role. Staff demonstrated an understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS.) However, this wasn’t always seen in practice. People were not supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff did not always support them in the least restrictive way possible.

The Oaks had recently gone through a period of change during which time standards had fallen. Staff had received additional support from Essex County Council during this time. The new manager was only appointed one month prior to our inspection but had already made a number of improvements in the home. The laundry was not clean and hygienic in line with appropriate guidance.
There are a few little concerns that we have, we have mentioned them to the Manager who is working with us to resolve them. My loved one has just returned from their stay at the home - we found that the alarms were going off a lot of the time and not being answered which was a bit distracting. If my mother need permanent care i will be going to The Oaks first. I think the care and the home itself is very good but it's a shame she didn't take advantage of what is on offer there. My only feedback would have been for the staff to be more proactive in... It's been nice to watch the staff help him to his feet and walk him to the dining room and how content he is. Deepak and his team at The Oaks know that finding the home for you or your loved one is a choice not to be taken lightly.
